Fern disease

We have ferns planted in three different areas of the back yard, but all within relatively close proximity of each other. About a month ago, we noticed a black or dead spot in one of the beds. We thought it was isolated but now seems to have spread to the other two beds and now all the ferns appear to be dying. We've had an average amount of rain, so it isn't that they haven't been watered. Not sure what else to do. Suggestions?
