striped zebra tomatoes

Hi, I am a total newbie at gardening. I did a container garden, late. I picked striped zebras for my tomato and they have grown well - 4-5ft tall. I have about 2 dozen fruits in various sizes on them. However, the very first fruit to come in has never gotten bigger than a golf ball. Are these very small tomatoes or is he unable to grow because the bush has about many others popping out? Do you always have to pick them to ripen off-vine?
