Help with our Lawn (or Lack of)

My husband and I just bought our first home. The house was empty for about 1 1/2 years. The front lawn, really is not a lawn at all. It is just pretty much weeds. They were all green weeds at first. We mowed it at first, but now it is so dry we are thinking of just pulling everything out and spreading grass seeds. But, here is the question...HOW do we do that? How do we get rid of all the weeds and get the ground ready to spread seeds? And is that really what we want to do to get some nice green grass? We both think that buying the rolls of grass would be to costly. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

lawn primer-recommended text book for lawn class I took. ( You don't have to use a lot of lawn products.)
County extention office can also give
advice.
Don't plant more grass than you need, plant other things too. biodiversity
is a good thing!
While you are deciding on what to plant,
stop your weeds from spreading by removing their seed parts at least.
One weed spreads MANY seeds.
