Blackened annuals(marigolds)

I have two areas of my garden one contains a hibiscus tree and marigolds, the other contains 2 burning bush trees and marigolds. They are not coming to life in fact the branches are bare and the marigolds have become blackened from the root to the leaf and most have died. Does anyone no why or what I can do to help these great plants? Thank you Denise
