Name That Tree

I have a tree growing in my yard that when it puts out leaves they are green, flat and oblong. They tree itself has thorns on it. I know it isn't a rose bush cuz I have wild roses. My dad said that he saw them when he was younger around Bluewater and that when they grow bigger, they lose their thorns and have a white kind of ball flower on them. Do you know what kind of tree this is?
