Gardenia Illness

I planted a gardenia in my yard getting morning to noon sun, 3 years ago. It was beautiful with new growth,and beautiful flowers and thriving. Then this past winter, all the leaves turned brown with no new growth this spring. I cut it all the way back, removing the browned leaves and branches, and now, there is green stuff on the branches, but minor new growth at the base of the plant. The leaves on the branches I left that were green are turning brown.
What is wrong, and how do I fix my poor plant?
