HEAT MATS FOR PROPOGATION

I'm interested in using heat mats to start my seeds indoors, but am appalled at how expensive they are for a mat the size of 1 seedling tray. And I was thinking about six seedling trays! Has anyone used electric blankets under black plastic? It seems to me like it would work. Is there something I'm not seeing correctly. (I'm at 8,000 ft in CO -- can't plant outside til June.)
