Garden soil - wood ash added

Simply putting wood ash on any soil without a soil test to guide the application is not a really good idea since that will raise the soils pH very quickly. The one good thing is that it will not last becasue the Calcium Carbonate, CACO3, is very water soluble and washes out quickly
Contact your local office of the
Pennsylvania State University USDA Cooperative Extension Service about having a good, reliable soil test done to see what damage was done and maybe how quickly it will get correctged.
