bulb gardens

I live in Chicago, IL and have a front bulb and perennial garden. Last fall, instead of disposing of all our leaves, we just piled them on top of our then dead garden. I just went out to clean things up for spring and found tons of green growth under all the leaves. I had plenty of daffodil and tulips shoots as well as some of my summer perennials. Is everything going to die this weekend when it gets back down to the 30's? Should I cover everything back up?
