Spreading Plants won't Spread

Sometimes it just takes time. The Lily of the Valley I planted needed about 5 years to start spreading out. But it may also be the soil.
What is this soil like? Well amended with organic matter that is evenly moist but well drained, or compacted soil unable to breath that holds too much moisture?
