spreading plants won't spread

I have planted ferns, hosts, euanomous, lilies of the valley, english ivy and pachysandra. None of them will spread. I have a few twigs of each after 3 years and more. I have a large maple which is why i bought shade toleant plants.... what can I do to encourage spreading?
