There is no need for any kind of containment for a compost pile. I started, many years ago, just piling the material to compost on the area where the garden would go and when it was ready just spread that pile out and started another in another area. The link below will take you to a very good site on composting.
Some people do grow "stuff" inside all winter and depending on what you grow a terrarium may not be necessary. Salad greens are very easy to grow, even in fairly low light. Some people even bring a tomato plant inside and get fresh tomatoes during the winter.
When do those melons get mushy and go bad?
