Starting potatoes in the snow?

A buddy told me of his grandpa peeling potatoes in Nov/Dec and tossing the peels in his garden ontop of the snow. Then they would sprout in the spring and come June he had fresh potatoes. Anyone ever heard of or tried that? I just peeled potatoes last night and thought I'd give that a whirl.
