flowering trees

Help! I hope someone out there knows how to solve this problem. I have a mound in my front yard. It has a minature Japanese maple and a dogwood. The dogwood never flowered well and the pink flowers came out red. I thought it was the tree, then I planted a plum tree from another garden that flowered beautifully and on my mound, it gets no flowers. What is going on, it can't be the trees, but the soil or interaction among the tree? What is up???
