The newspaper, as would any mulch material, will help make that soil something your grass would really like to grow in. While it would smother any grass growing where it is put unless the plants roots are killed new growth will be better, lusher, stronger.
First step is to be sure all the roots from the previous grass growth is removed from that planting bed and then you need to place a good barrier around the edges to keep the grasses roots from reinvaiding that bed. Since Bermuda spreads by stolens (above ground roots) as well as the undergrounf roots whatever barrier is used needs to keep both from invading.
