Too late to plant?

Up here in Michigan I have planted trees and shrubs until nearly Christmas with no survival problems, those plants actually do better the following growing season than plants put in in the spring. Most likely because those plants are able to get their roots well established without the competition from the necessary top growth that spring planted trees and shrubs need.
