What is this tree?

There is a fruit(?) tree in my garden - shiny green leaves, brown fruit, almost like a tiny pear, that appear to be ripe now.I know it's hard w/o a picture. They are out of my reach, but am curious to know what they might be. I can send a picture.

    This is a wild guess, but with out a pic, I'm guessing it's a paw paw you see.
