White Fall Flower ID

I've only seen them in 2 settings - one woodland and the other a suburban front garden. From a distance they look like snow white cosmos. But close up they have rose-like petals on long sturdy stems and dark green heart shaped leaves clost to the ground. They are in full bloom right now in SE Pennsylvania. I was told that they are anemones, but that does not sound right. Any Ideas?
