Dave - Growing Boxes

Just how important using treated or untreated wood would be will depend on just what you are growing in those boxes. Foods would be one thing and flowers would be something all together different. There are naturally rot resistant woods, Cedars, Redwoods, some of the locusts, and keep in mind that it took some 30 years to discover that the old CCA PT wood leached Arsenic and another 20 years to get it banned. However, the real problem with pressure treated wood is not that heavy metals would leach into the soil and get on food crops (root crops would be the major problem) but that you would pick up those potential poisons on your hands and ingest them.
