I want a flowers!

Hi everyone! I am very new to gardening. I was raised in NY where there was no shortage of greenery or color, but in Vegas it is nothing but desert. :( I found some african daisies that I want to plant around the steps to the front porch. I have no clue where to start... Can someone please give me some advice about planting flowers in a hot, desert, gravel, hard soil, type of place? Thanks in advance!
