Unknown Object in Garden

I have been searching around the internet for some answers but have found nothing on this topic. I was watering my garden today and i noticed something very strange. There were two places in my mulch that when watered they gave off this brown smoke. It continued for a good 10-20 seconds and only continued when water was in contact with it. Once they were done smoking, or possibly releasing spores, i moved the objects and they look like a normal leaf.

Any guidance on what this maybe and if it may present a problem please reply.
