Garden bed against a fence

Hi, I just bought my first place and I'm new to all of this.
I building a large garden bed which will back up to an older fence. What should I use to protect this fence from the soil and to keep the soil from falling through.
Any ideas would be great.

    I have the same problem and If I had the money to invest in doing it right I would do like my Dad did (he knew everything) and run wide boards down along the base and sink it half way to hold run-off back and protect the fence. What I have done is used railroad tyes as that is what I had on hand to make raised beds in front of the fence.
