Eggs in my flower bed?

Eggs in my flower bed?

My wife and I recently bought a house that had a fairly well landscaped flower bed around the front of the house. Today I discovered the remains of two eggs near two different inch and a half wide holes. My question is what is in the holes? Did it hatch from the egg? Did it eat the egg? Any help would be great!
