Sod Selection

want to sod my front yard. I have a
southern exposure which gets very hot
and dry in the late summer. I have
four tall shade trees that shade the
house. Under these tress no grass
grows, approximately 1/4 of the yard.
Also we have a pool which means we have
a lot of company, and they park on my
lawn. I wanted to scatter stepping
stones in the area that gets parked on
to reinforce that area. I have no idea
what kind of grass I currently have, it
starts out nice but doesn't look very
good by the end of the summer. What
kind of sod should I use?

sod or seed?
The grasses available as sod are quite limited. While I'm not real sure what is available in Louisianna, up here sod is mostly bluegrass types. There is a wider variety available as seed that may meet your needs better than sod. Most grasses will have a hard time competing with the trees in the shade and traffic will wear the grass out quickly although getting the soil in shape, adding enough organic matter to give these perennials a chance, can help.
