My Friends Rhoeo is dying!

I tried everything, but the base of the stems are striveling up, and rotting away. This plant was exposed to about 1 minute of zero degree temp 3 weeks ago, and I dont know why if this is the reason its dying. No signs of decay till this week started and about 85% of the plant has rotted away!! This is not my plant, and when my friend gave it to me to look after it for the break it was thriving. Its watered, I switched sunlight locations. Can someone tell me whats going on?!
