Original Message Laundry detergent to green up grass
Laundry detergents used to contain large quantities of phosphorus which could have helped "green" up your grass, but since it was discovered, several years ago that the phosphorus was polluting your water supply the detergent manufacturers have been required to cut way back.
The best way to clean up, and green up, a lawn is with proper lawn care. Mow properly, water when needed, and feed the lawn with 2 pounds of Nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year, 1/2 of which could come from the grass clippings if you mulch mow.
